How long does the training take?
Training takes place in the pool on Mondays and at the clubhouse on Fridays. After passing an assessment you will then progress to open water. All members/instructors give theie time for free so don't expect miracles.
Ocean Diver - Qualified to dive to 20m
- 7 hours theory lessons
- 5 hours pool training
- 5 hours open water training
Usually takes 6-9 months depending upon ability and availability
Sports Diver - Qualified to dive to 35m and carry out decompression dives
- 6 hours theory
- 6 hours open water training
Usually takes 6 months to a year after completing Ocean Diver
What does it cost?
New members pay £200 (can be paid in 3 installments) which covers BSAC membership, branch membership, a monthly magazine (DIVE worth £3.99 per issue), student pack, use of kit during training, training, liability insurance and affiliated membership of Sedgley Park Rugby Club. After the first year renewal costs £120.
How much is the kit?
Advice on types of equipment available will be given during the first few lectures. You will need your own mask, fins and snorkel. The branch will lend you a set of equipment to use for the first year or until you qualify as an Ocean Diver, whichever is first. For open water training you will need a dry suit, which can be hired from the local dive shop. After the first year or qualification as an Ocean Diver you will be able to hire other equipment from the club until you buy your own.
Do I need a medical?
Before joining you must complete a medical questionnaire. Depending on your answers you may be referred to a specialist diving referee.
Do I have to be a good swimmer?
You have to pass a swimming assessment but only have to swim 200m and you can take your time!!!
