SS Cartagena, Liverpool Bay

The S.S. Cartagena was a T.R. Class minesweeping trawler built in Ontario, Canada by the Port Arthur Shipbuilding Co in 1917 for the British Admiralty and known as T.R. 4. The ships dimensions were 38.1 m long, 7.2 m wide and 4.1 m deep with a displacement of 275 tons. In 1926 the gun platform was removed and a fish hold was made forward of the main bunkers and she was sold to the Boston Deep Sea Fishing and Ice Company. The ship was renamed Cartagena. In December 1927 the ship was sold on to the Brazilian Ministry of Marine, on condition that it was delivered to Rio de Janeiro.

Diving the Battleships in Scapa Flow

The three remaining battleships of the High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow are SMS Konig, SMS Markgraf and SMS Kronprinz Willhelm. These are all from the Konig class of dreadnought, the first in the High Seas Fleet to have their main armourment positioned down the centre line of the ship so that all of the guns could be bought to bear for either port or starboard broadside.

Diving and snorkelling at Capernwray 14 July 2018

I went to Capernwray and I saw a perch biting my fin. I also kicked up dirt from the floor and perch and a few other fish came to eat it. While I was snorkelling I let out a bit of bread and a lot of fish came circling around my feet eating up all of the bread. I saw quite a lot of trout which were as long as my arm. I wanted to see the sturgeon, but I wasn't going deep enough. The deepest I went was to the plane, but I couldn't see down to the plane. I was impressed by how clear the water was, until I saw that when it got deeper it got darker.

Annual pilgrimage Porthkerris 2018

Dive trip to Porthkerris. August 2018
We drove down to St Keverne for our annual diving pilgrimage. Some of us were camping in our usual field at the Village campsite. The pigs were much quieter this year, no usual squabbling or loud snoring (except for Alan). This is because poor Winston the old pig had died (RIP).
All the other divers and partners were scattered in the other B&Bs like the Old Temperance House or Parc N’Grouse.

2019 Annual trip to Porthkerris

13 divers and 9 non-divers. Camping, B&B and self catering options to suit all pockets. Single cylinder, twins, side mounts and rebreather divers all diving. Variety of walks and sight seeing for the non-divers.

Good weekend with shore diving on Friday, from the Celtic Kitten on Saturday, from both the Celtic Cat and the Celtic Kitten on Sunday and again from the Kitten on Monday morning. Good weather, sea a bit choppy on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning but calm the rest of the time. Pod of porpoises near Lizard Point. Adam's first sea dives.

Capernwray Firework Night and Last Late Night of Season 2019

Mike, Steve, Wayne and Elaine dived this year with Lynda as shore cover. Not as busy as previous years but very enjoyable even though I got fairly wet! Have to concede I need a new drysuit! The water was a balmy 10 degrees, the visibility quite good on the far side at the Candida, the first dive being a twilight dive, getting to see most if not all of the Sturgeons on both dives. Thought we'd lost Steve at the sump at one point with it being a little murky but having your torch does help to relocate a lost buddy.
