Our group were the only people on the 10.30am tour of the U-534. The exhibition has been moved since some of our members last went on it and it's not as 'hands on' and accessible as it used to be but it was still a very enjoyable and informative visit. The submarine has been cut into four sections for the exhibition as it would have been much too big to display as a whole. As it's mainly an outdoor tour we were fortunate that, although it was a cold day, it was fine and somewhat sunny. To find out more about the U-534 go to:

After spending just over an hour there some of us took the ferry from Birkenhead to Liverpool and had a relaxing wander around Albert Dock, leaving there at 2pm to return to Birkenhead. As we got back to Bolton we ran into the drizzle. All in all - a good day out.
If you haven't been before, it really is a worthwhile visit because you go in a recompression chamber whilst you don't need it and it is fun. However, should you ever NEED to go in one you could be feeling disorientated and apprehensive, so having already been in one would be most beneficial.
If you have already been in one, this could be a slightly different experience for you. They apparently go into the medical side a bit more because this one is based in a hospital - slightly different from when we used to go every year to the one at the Police Underwater Search Unit at Hutton and from when we went to the Diver Training Centre near York when we also had the 'hard hat' and heavy boots diving experience.
