Firework Night at Capernwray 2018

Firework Night at Capernwray 2018

The format was changed this year possibly due to how busy it had been with swimmers in 2017 so Wednesday was for divers and swimmers and a separate event was held for the swimmers competition. This for me worked better as it was much easier to get in the water and the car park and facilities weren't as crowded. Only three hardy souls ventured out for the last late night Wayne, John Pearson and myself. We did two dives going from the shallow beach area on the right, the first dive took us past the plane and along the cliff face to the right, travelling up the gravel 'road' to the diving bell, aiming to find the Candida but instead we came across the Gnome garden, then worked our way back coming back out on the shallow beach. After a snack of sausage butties and coffee provided by me (wasn't sure how busy it would be in the cafe)! We then enjoyed a surface break in the cafe with two cups of tea, ginger cake and treacle toffee. Our second dive was again from the shallow beach area to the Apex van, the visibility wasn't brilliant and that was possibly due to a couple of divers we followed finning up the silt. We went down the 'road closed' to the Candida, very dark in this area at the best of times but more so at night - quite spooky, especially when you turn off your torch!! We spotted the large Sturgeon before moving on to the Gnome garden again, heading back we watched the fireworks under water which for me is always amazing and you can hear them too. We wanted to go via the sump but unfortunately missed it before coming out on the rocky beach. The water wasn't too cold, visibility not brilliant but not to bad at the far side as not many divers over that side, A great night and luckily the weather wasn't too bad for us to change and pack gear.
